Calibration Circle was initially created for yarn/wire in 2016. This 2019 performance is a new, revised iteration. The title, Calibration Circle, refers to ideas related to the history of cinematic representation. Two “unseen” aspects of cinema are revealed and utilized to frame two central components of the score: film countdown leaders and Foley Art.
Piano performers will read different types of countdown film leaders. Countdown leaders have been used throughout the history of film to direct starting times and calibration points for 35mm and 16mm film screenings, essentially acting as scores for projectionists.
The leaders used in this score are no longer in circulation today. These beautiful film leaders have been extensively researched and assembled by Matt Soar, intermedia artist, filmmaker, and Professor of Communication Studies at Concordia University. The examples have been collected by Soar and can be viewed on his website,
www.lostleaders.ca. Many thanks to Matt for his generous permission to use these leader images in the score.
The score for percussionists is a video. I created this video from research GoPro videos I took during the initial exploration process of an artist residency in Sokolowsko Poland in a dilapidated sanitorium.
Percussionists will be working together, creating Foley sound effects for the video which repeats and changes speed often. Foley art performances, not to be confused with film soundtrack sound design, are rehearsed thoroughly and choreographed. Much research, trial and error goes into instrumentation selection.
this live performance took place on may 14, 2019 at zürcher gallery in new york ny as part of yarn/wire/currents, presented by
